IT was a glittering event at the World Martial Arts Championships for Frank Massar’s triumphant team as they snapped up no fewer than 18 accolades – a feat Grandmaster Massar described as “a very impressive tally of medals”.

Competing at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, the hard-hitting squad from Massar’s Martial Arts Association, who train in Somers Town, competed in various disciplines.

Fight protocols included kickboxing, weapons, breaking events and forms and kata, in which competitors are judged on detailed choreography of movement patterns.

The striking display saw Master Carlos Moseley, Tevfik Durakli, Omar Mechita, Abraham Mechita, Teddy Field, Joshua Coombs and, of course, Frank Massar all became world champions.

“The team should be very proud of what they have achieved,” said Grandmaster Massar. “It was a very impressive medals haul and they made the association proud.

“I would like to say a special thank you to manager John Kennedy and all the wonderful staff at the Somers Town Community Sports Centre for all their help and support in preparing for a great World Championship.

“We have a fairly large following all over the country, and out as far as Italy, so I just wanted to thank them for all they have done for us and their ongoing support.”
