THE Gunners secured fourth place in the Premier League at the weekend – and with it Champions League football for a 17th consecutive season.

But for one player the celebrations were short-lived as he was left reflecting on what might of been.

Wojciech Szczesny kept a clean sheet on Sunday as Arsenal wrapped up their home fixtures with a 1-0 victory over West Brom.

But the Polish shot-stopper admitted afterwards that he will head into the summer with regrets that Arsène Wenger’s side could not sustain their title challenge after topping the table for much of the season.

“I think it’s good to sign off with a win and sign off in style in front of our fans.

“But with two games to go, we had nothing to play for and I think we shouldn’t really be in that position,” said Szczesny.

“We should be fighting for the title.

“Of course, there’s a sense of what might have been.

“I believe that we should be in a position to challenge to win the Premier League, and maybe Sunday would have been a completely different atmosphere if we had kept going the way we were earlier on in the season.

“I never considered fourth place before the start of the campaign as a successful season and a good position.

“I play for Arsenal Football Club because I want to win the title every year.”

fine margins

all they had to do was compete in those away games against the big teams in the same way Sunderland did and they would be competing.
four draws at MC, CFC, LFC and EFC would give Arsenal 80 pts and the table would be
AFC 80
LFC 79
CFC 77
EFC 67.
And that is only by drawing away. Preventing the others from going off with the points. That is where Arsenal need to improve.
