ACTOR Rupert Everett this week paid a visit to Soho’s Bar Italia for the unveiling of a series of paintings capturing the famous café’s dynamic ambience, writes Lee Bell.
Many of the institution’s regulars, including Mr Everett and fellow actor John Hurt, appear in works by artist Ed Gray. The West End Extra has also been immortalised in the canvases – one customer can be seen leafing through a copy of the paper.

It took Mr Gray more than three months of sketches and reworking to complete the final piece, a full-size print of which will hang in the bar for a month. He said: “The pressure was really on with this one as I wanted it to be exhibited in Bar Italia itself. I had to do justice to the myriad of characters that frequent the bar.”
