LETTERS: What’s Bloomsbury then?

Published: 13 January, 2017

• WHILE I agree with Darren (Lord of Holborn) that Holborn has its own sturdy identity (Letters, January 5, online), I suspect that the reason estate agents and others use the term Bloomsbury is because of the postcode WC1.

He notes “certain estate agents call Holborn Bloomsbury when it is not; and they have even called Lambs Conduit Street Bloomsbury, which is Holborn”.

The Post Office designates WC1 as Bloomsbury no matter what. We live east of King’s Cross but are still (just) in WC1. So our official address includes the word “Bloomsbury”.

It feels ludicrous to us to be described as living in Bloomsbury. We have to catch a bus to what we consider Bloomsbury, that is, around the British Museum.

So long live Holbloomswell and our Amwell Triangle, perched on the borders of WC1, EC1, and N1.
